Attackers Open Fire at Nightclub in Istanbul, Killing 35

Slide Show Istanbul Nightclub Attack

CreditMurat Ergin/Ihlas News Agency, via Reuters

BURSA, Turkey — Attackers dressed in Santa Claus suits opened fire inside a packed Istanbul nightclub shortly after midnight on New Year's Day, killing at least 35 people and wounding dozens more, Turkish officials said.

Gov. Vasip Sahin of Istanbul Province called it a terrorist attack.

The attack occurred about 1:15 a.m. at the nightclub, Reina, where as many as 600 people were celebrating the New Year, officials said.

Mr. Sahin said the attackers — initial reports said there had been as many as three — had fired on the police before heading inside the club.

"One person first kills the police officer outside, and then a civilian," the governor said. "Inside, he rained bullets brutally, mercilessly over innocent people who were there just to celebrate the New Year and have fun."

The club overlooks the Bosporus — which separates Europe and Asia — and some clubgoers jumped into the water in their panic over the attack.

Mehmet Kocarslan, the owner, told the Hurriyet news site that there had been increased security measures for the past 10 days after American intelligence officials had warned about an attack. He said the attackers had used Kalashnikov rifles.

Television footage showed dozens of ambulances rushing to the scene and people fleeing, some walking with difficulty, arm in arm.

Hurriyet said three assailants in Santa costumes had opened fire at the security staff members at the gate and stormed in. NTV, a Turkish channel, said the police were still searching for the attackers.

On the European side of Istanbul, the neighborhood is an international travel destination known for its food stalls and vibrant night life. The area is a mix of stone, brick and wooden buildings along pedestrian lanes.

Turkey is still recovering from a failed coup attempt that began on July 15 in which at least 265 people were killed.

Though the effort sputtered in a matter of hours, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan responded with a sweeping, monthslong crackdown targeting dissidents across Turkish society. In addition to arresting thousands of military personnel suspected of involvement in the coup, hundreds of thousands of civil servants, educational workers and journalists have been purged.

The coup and the assassination of the Russian Ambassador Andrey G. Karlov in Ankara on Dec. 19 raised concerns that the country's security establishment has grown ineffective. The internal turmoil also raised doubts about how well Turkey will be able to participate in international counterterrorism efforts, especially with regard to the Islamic State.

In the wake of the crackdown, protests against Mr. Erdogan have led to frequent clashes between demonstrators and the police. And reports of targeted attacks against civilians after martial law was declared in July have revived painful memories of the political violence Turkey experienced in the 1970s and 1980s.

Greece takes early lead in summer 2017 searches

Published on Friday, December 30, 2016

Thomas Cook says Greece was the single most searched-for summer 2017 destination on Christmas Day and Boxing Day among Brits looking for summer 2017.

The country accounted for 17% of all searches on thomascook.com, according to the operator.

The Spanish destinations of the Canary Islands, Balearics and mainland Spain accounted for a third of all searches over the same two days, with 36% of searches for Spain.

When looking at individual Spanish destinations, the Canaries, the Balearics and Spain were second, third and fourth most-search-for summer 2017 destination respectively.

Turkey was fifth and the US sixth on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

The operator said in October that more holidaymakers will opt for an all-inclusive holiday in 2017, in particular for destinations such as Greece and the Canaries, which haven't traditionally been recognised for their all-inclusive offering.

Thomas Cook launched its 'You want, We do' turn-of-year advertisin g campaign on TV on Christmas Day.

Iraq's Displaced Turkmens Flee to Turkey Through Syria

Out of the frying pan into the fire, some 300 Iraqi Turkmens have desperately crossed into war-torn Syria from their hometown Tal Afar, the city that lies between Daesh-held Mosul and the Syrian border.

Their destination was Turkey, home to about 3 million refugees from Syria, and after an arduous journey for about one month; they managed to arrive in the border city of Hatay, with empty stomachs, torn clothes and deteriorating health.

The group, which has been trickling into the Turkish city since a few days ago, was welcomed by a charity catering to refugees and gave an account of their plight, their escape from the Hashd al-Shaabi, a group backed by Iran whose militants are accused of abusing residents of Tal Afar held by Daesh.

Authorities rounded up the displaced after the local charity gave them new clothes, served them food and transported them to a camp built by Turkey's Diyanet Foundation in Syria's Azaz.

Hatay Governor Erdal Ata told Anadolu Agency on Wednesday that sick refugees would be hosted in Turkey until they are treated while the others will be sent to Syria, to a safe camp near the Turkish-Syrian border.

Most refugees hid their faces and did not give their names when journalists requested interviews. They told the Doğan News Agency that they walked on foot for forty days to reach Turkey when they faced threats by Hashd al-Shaabi as well as from Daesh which partially controls the predominantly Iraqi Turkmen city.

Pregnant mothers among them gave birth on the road while some elderly refugees froze to death. A 10-day-old infant was among the new arrivals.

Refugees claimed nearly 10,000 people fled Tal Afar and at least 5,000 of them were in Syria and trying to cross into Turkey. They said their food quickly ran out and they had to eat "whatever they came across" to survive. The group said they feared abuse at the hands of Iran-backed militia and were forced to leave when they were caught in the middle of the fight between Daesh and the militia.

Turkey frequently expresses concerns on the liberation of Tal Afar by the Iran-backed militia and urges Baghdad not to allow militias to take control of the city and instead, to set up a joint force of Sunnis and Shiites to prevent sectarian strife during and after the capture of the town.

Book holidays now to beat price hikes: Air fare and accommodation are costs set to soar in post-Brexit squeeze

  • Holiday prices are set to rise by at least 10 per cent due to Britain leaving the EU
  • Families are being warned to book summer breaks early to try to avoid the hike
  • A 10 per cent rise would add £300 to the cost of a £3,000 holiday
  • 12

Families are being warned to book summer breaks early to avoid price rises of at least 10 per cent linked to the Brexit vote.

Christmas and the New Year is the busiest booking time for travel firms, with customers being wooed with a series of promotions.

Companies are promising big savings and free child places for those who book early for summer 2017.

Christmas is the busiest booking time but research suggests holidays will cost more this year

However, industry research suggests travel companies face a squeeze that will inevitably lead to higher prices later this year.

The fall in the value of the pound following the Brexit vote means the cost of booking hotels, villas and apartments in Europe and the US has gone up.

At the same time, the price of airli ne fuel, bought in dollars, threatens to put up the cost of fares.

A 10 per cent rise would add £300 to the cost of a £3,000 holiday and some research suggests prices could rise by up to 20 per cent.

It comes as a survey of 2,000 adults by travel protection body Atol suggested 6.5million people would book breaks between yesterday and New Year's Eve – more than a million a day.

Spain was set to be the most in-demand destination, with 28 per cent of people choosing it, followed by Italy (19 per cent) and Greece (13 per cent).

The holiday industry has faced two years of turmoil following terror attacks in previously popular destinations such as Tunisia, Egypt and Turkey.

With little sign of improvement, firms are promoting Vietnam, Cuba and Singapore as long-haul alternatives.

With terror in places such as Tunisia and Turkey holiday firms are promoting alternatives such as Vietnam (pictured)

Experts predicts that Sardinia, pictured, and mainland Italy will be popular destinations

They say mainland Italy, Sardinia, Croatia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, South Africa and the US are also likely to win tourists turning away from countries tarnished by terror.

A study by online firm Travelzoo found four in five UK travel companies are expecting price rises.

Managing director Joel Brandon-Bravo warned families to book early to avoid the worst. He said people should also consider trying new destinations, beyond the normally popular Spain and Greece.

He said: 'For those looking to minimise the impact of these imminent price hikes we would advise consumers to book early for peak holiday periods such as summer 2017.

'They should also consider destinations that have more favourable exchange rates and be open-minded about which country they visit.'

A survey by Thomson found, despite concerns about cramped conditions on holiday flights, more than three in four people are happy to travel more than nine hours.

Several package holiday firms are offering trips to Phu Quoc, Vietnam's largest island. Cuba's Cayo Santa Maria island, connected to the mainland by a 30-mile causeway, has also been added to online brochures.

Thomas Cook said Brexit had triggered more interest in all-inclusive resorts, where travellers are less vulnerable to exchange rate changes.

As a result, it has increased the number of all-inclusive deals to destinations other than Turkey, Egypt and Tunisia by 20 per cent.

New Global Alliance Forms As Countries Pledge To End The Disease Of Islam, Once And For All…

Since terrorists are spreading into the Western countries, the world at large is waking up from the globalist slumber. It raises some serious questions about the immigration and open-borders.

Recently, the Hungarian PM Viktor Orban "laid down the law", saying that they don't care what the UN says. Hungary and the other "Visegrad 4" countries   — Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic — will do what is in "the best interests of their people" instead of what Eurocrats tell them.

    <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvOsC6xdWNo" target="_blank">Watch the VIDEO </a>

Orban announced the joint statement between the Visegard Group, saying that while they  will respect the EU position, they will do what they want to protect themselves from Turkey.

He also thanks Austria for helping. Austria has been besieged by Muslims twice, and that is the reason why they have a bold voice against Turkey joining the EU.

If you noticed well, Orban criticized Turkey, and suggested that Hungary can defend themselves on their own.

    <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><em>VIA Conservative Daily Post</em></span>

Orban's speech was about Hungary and the V4, but this is a lot bigger. It is about the re-emergence of old alliances and history repeating itself as Europe draws itself into another horrible war with the Muslims.

Not surprisingly, the most recent head of the United Nations, Ban Ki Moon, has called the rise of such nationalist movements as Trump, Orban, Brexit, etc. as a xenophobic  "insult" to the past few decades.

Not surprisingly, Ban Ki Moon and the larger UN apparatus resents Israel's long tradition of nationalist self-interest. This is why the UN and Obama are cooperating, once again, to undermine Israel's sovereignty in the Middle East. Undermining Israel in the face of a Muslim majority would send a strong but subtle anti-nationalist message to any defiant Europeans and newly "Trumpified" Europeans.

This is why Moon's official statement, issued during the U.N.'s "International Migrant Day," is an example of the alternative reality in which the globalist Establishment elite resides. It reflects a vast inability to understand the nationalist-populist counter-revolution sweeping the West.

To dismiss the rise of the populist Right — one of the most important political developments in modern times — and the legitimate economic and social grievances driving it as an "insult" is a shocking display of aloof arrogance. Moreover, the notion that the Marine Le Pens and Geert Wilders of the world "seek to alienate" migrants and refugees is simply untrue. Those migrants and refugees come from mainly Muslim countries with values and cultural norms vastly different from our own — and are already alien.

Not one of the populist politicians in Europe or America has ever blamed Muslim migrants for the "various ills of society." They've blamed them, instead, for the specific ills they've brought with them, namely a massive spike in theft, sexual assault, and domestic Islamic terrorism.

    <img class="aligncenter" src="https://i0.wp.com/conservativedailypost-guvbvzsunddro8yrw.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/Map_of_the_European_Migrant_Crisis_2015.jpg?w=800&amp;ssl=1″ alt="map_of_the_european_migrant_crisis_2015″ width="644″ height="599″ />

Yet "we must reject intolerance, discrimination and policies driven by xenophobic rhetoric and the scapegoating of migrants. Those who abuse and seek to harm migrants must be held to account," Ban wrote.

Unfortunately, that Muslim migrants pose a direct threat to Western stability is now an inescapable truth. There has been a steady stream of horrifying stories coming out of Europe.

Resistance to mass Muslim migration is not driven by "xenophobic rhetoric and the scapegoating of migrants" — it is driven by the very actions of some of the migrants. Ban might be quick to condemn those who would hurt migrants, but he willfully ignores the abuse and harm certain Muslim migrants have perpetrated on Westerners.

Not content with slamming those who do not wish to see their homelands become Islamic colonies, Ban also demanded that Western nations willingly comply in the displacement of their own people. "We need stronger international cooperation among countries of origin, transit and destination that is guided by international law and standards," Ban wrote.

"Good governance of migration also demands expanding legal channels for safe migration, including for family reunification, for labor mobility at all skill levels, and educational opportunities for children and adults, as well as decriminalizing irregular migration and regularizing the status of undocumented migrants," he continued.

It is time for the U.S. to leave the U.N. We fund about 70% of this organization. It is run by idiots who care nothing about individual countries. They want open borders in every country. Without borders and immigration laws you will no longer have individual countries.

Christmas Isn’t Autism-Friendly, But You Can Avoid Meltdowns With These Tips

Holidays for kids on the autism spectrum can be difficult and stressful. Mix together a few days without school, a large crowd of relatives with booming voices, the scent of roasted turkey permeating the kitchen, and a surplus of food that won't be eaten due to sensory issues, and it can become a recipe for disaster.

My 14-year-old sons have autism, and we've managed to endure a multitude of holiday gatherings. Christmas certainly isn't one of the most autism-friendly holidays. How have we survived and maintained our sense of humor and sanity? It hasn't been easy, but with these tips your holiday might be happier:

Before the whole gang arrives, get settled. Explore the new surroundings and find a place to be comfortable. It can take several minutes for my son to transition from the van to Grandma's kitchen. Allow plenty of time for the transition so you don't miss the meal.

In our case, that's usually a fruit salad — plain fruit without sauces or marshmallows or juices. Will my son eat gravy, green bean casserole, and cranberry sauce? Not a chance. When my kids were younger, we hauled entire meals to relatives' homes. Sometimes that meant lunch meat, a cookie, rice crackers and fruit. Other times, it meant homemade chicken nuggets. It wasn't regular holiday fare, but the boys were comfortable eating it and nobody starved.

While it's certainly more costly, I prefer having holidays at my home. (As the kids have gotten older, this has become less of an issue.) Ask everyone to bring a dish or two. When I host a meal, I'm not worried about my kids breaking Aunt Matilda's antique porcelain bird, wandering down the street, or sitting in Grandpa's unlocked car in the attached garage. Hosting often feels like less work if I'm not chasing my kids around the block. Another bonus: My kids have items at home to keep themselves occupied.

We bring our Wii video game system so our boys have something to do. While other people have the ability to converse around the kitchen table, tell stories or play games, one of my sons is most comfortable doing something he knows: playing Wii Sports or Mario Kart. If he doesn't have something to do while he's at my parents' home, he will open and shut various doors, including their garage door. That gets old (and loud) after a while.

Designate a quiet spot for meals and downtime far from the noise and chaos. (I know a family whose sons used to sit in the pantry and eat cereal during holiday mealtimes. It worked for them.) When our boys were toddlers, we fed them in high chairs in the breezeway at my in-laws' home. They were too overstimulated and upset to eat in the dining room or the kitchen with everyone else. One year, my son took bites between opening and shutting his obsession: the automatic garage door.

The schedule is unpredictable during the holiday break when school isn't in session. Routines are out of whack. Businesses are closed. This can cause anxiety levels to rise for parents and children. During one holiday gathering at our home, I excused myself, loaded up our recyclables, and took my son for a drive. We dropped off recycling because that was our Thursday routine. I knew if I took time to do this chore with him, he would be happier. It worked.

Maybe that's a quiet space, a helping hand, lack of judgmental comments, or the ability to chill out when Junior decides to flush the toilet 75 times in one hour. When others know what you need to make the day go more smoothly, most people are happy to help. It's not easy to ask for help, but it's critical.

It's not always possible to stay for hours and hours at a holiday gathering. Do what works best for your family even if it's not popular. My husband and I know when we've hit the breaking point and need to get out of Dodge. It's helpful to leave a family function before the kids are in 100-percent meltdown mode.

Give thanks you were able to be together as a family, no matter how stressful it might have been. Be grateful for nap time if one exists. Be grateful if your child sleeps through the night. Be grateful when your car starts and you can leave the madness behind. Be grateful for the funny moments you surely experienced, such as your son swiping a warm, buttered roll out of your cousin's hands when she wasn't looking. Focus on that cup of tea you might be able to drink later in the day.

Go ahead, put your feet up and pour yourself a glass or two of wine when you get home or the company leaves. You've earned it.

Kusadasi is a beach resort town on Turkey's western Aegean coast and a major cruise ship destination. Just offshore on Pigeon Island is a walled Byzantine castle that once guarded the town, connected to the mainland via causeway.

Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt: The countries Australians travel to despite warnings

Israelis get some sun at one of their Mediterranean beaches, a popular drawcard with tourists.

They are the countries boasting beautiful sites and stunning attractions rich in history and tourism, but they also carry some pretty heavy travel warnings.

And although they remain "dangerous" — at least in parts — it seems intrepid Aussies can't get enough of them.

Despite the threat of terror attacks and political instability in parts of the Middle East, Aussies continue to visit Lebanon and Egypt in droves with visitor numbers up in these countries during the past year.

Research compiled by financial comparison site finder.com.au found the number of Australians visiting the Middle East and Northern Africa was 228,000 in the 12 months to October 2016 — slightly down on the previous year.

The world isn't that scary, but there are some countries you should avoid travelling to. Picture: Finder/DFATSource:Supplied

At least 12 of the 19 countries in these regions are named on the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's "do not travel" list or listed as "reconsider your need to travel".

The number of Australians visiting Lebanon increased by 27.8 per cent, up from 37,800 travellers in 2015 to 48,300 this year.

According to advice on the DFAT website, "Australians should reconsider their need to travel" to most of Lebanon.

While Egypt is high on many Aussies bucket list, the Australian Government also advises travellers to reconsider going there.

Yet 13,800 Australians visited the country this year, a slight increase from 13,100 travellers who visited the previous year.

Egypt has been hit by political instability in recent years as well as suffering a wave of attacks by Islamic militants since the military overthrew President Mohammed Morsi, a freely elected leader from the Muslim Brotherhood, in 2013.

Many of Morsi's supporters blamed Christians for supporting the overthrow and authorities have responded with a sweeping crackdown, jailing thousands of mostly Islamist dissidents and killing hundreds in clashes sparked by demonstrations.

The country has also been hit by terror attacks, which has hit the tourism industry hard.

Just this month, a suicide bomber killed 24 Christians during Sunday Mass at a Cairo chapel.

Israel is another destination in the Middle East which remains popular with travellers.

DFAT's recommendation that Australians exercise a high degree of caution here. The Gaza strip is marked as a do not travel zone while the West Bank is classified as in the 'reconsider your need to travel' category.

However despite simmering tensions and terrorist threats, Australians visiting Israel only dropped slightly from 21,000 in 2015, to 20,200 in 2016.

But it's not just the Middle East where travellers should be on their guard.

    AUSSIES IN DANGER?

Lowy Institute's Middle East expert Rodger Shanahan said many Australians continued to travel to the region for various reasons.

Dr Shanahan said Lebanon remained a fairly stable country overall and a lot of those who travelled there did so to visit extended family.

He said Egypt relied on tourism and that terror attacks, mainly carried out on government targets, had greatly affected visitor numbers.

However he pointed out if Australians were caught up in terror attacks it was usually indirectly.

"Terrorists aren't looking to target Australians directly over Americans," he said.

    "It's westerners in general."

Dr Shanahan said it was no surprise Australians were choosing not to travel to Turkey given it is not only political unstable, had suffered a failed coup this year and had terror attacks take place in major tourist areas and cities including Istanbul and Ankara.

"(Turkish President Tayyip) Erdogan hasn't exactly given his country great PR," he said.

"Those attacking Turkey through terror attacks want to hit them where it hurts and that's through tourism, which is effective."

Phil Sylvester, a travel safety expert at Travel Insurance Direct, told news.com.au Australians will continue to travel to dangerous locations despite travel warnings. Egypt, he says, is a prime example of that.

"Despite the regular reports of bomb attacks and other atrocities there hasn't been a single tourist killed or injured at the pyramids or in Luxor in 2016.

"Since mid-year Egyptian authorities have been encouraging visitors to return to the country, perhaps the campaign has had an effect on those longing to tick these ancient wonders off their bucket list."

That doesn't mean to say Australians hadn't got caught up or witnessed dangerous situations first-hand.

In May this year, Australian-UK national Richard Osman was on-board EgyptAir flight MS804 which disappeared from radar during a flight from Paris to Cairo.

The Airbus A320 was en route had 66 passengers and crew on-board when it went down early.

Egypt's aviation minister Sherif Fathy blamed terrorism for the cause of the crash.

While Lebanon may be much more stable, DFAT recommends Australians "reconsider your need to travel" there.

Southern suburbs of Beirut are no go zones, as are Tripoli and areas in northern Lebanon.

Writing in news.com.au last year, Australian author of the travel website MyArabia.me and mother-of-three Taghred Chandab said 15 years of civil war had created great divisions among religious and political groups that still stand today, making life difficult and even dangerous in parts.

She said hundreds of thousands of refugees who spilt into the country had a profound impact on Lebanon, which remains "deeply divided over the Syrian war".

Relatives also told her she was at great risk because militants have been known to target westerners travelling through certain areas.

She also revealed armed Lebanese soldiers and tanks heavily guard Tripoli's streets.

Despite its past troubles she said the country and its people remained beautiful and she wished she discovers it earlier.

    PAKISTAN, TURKEY, AFRICA

According to figures, the number of people visiting Pakistan increased this year.

This is compared to the same period the previous year, up from 26,800 Aussie travellers in 2015 to 38,000 visitors in 2016.

DFAT has issued a "reconsider your need to travel" advice for the entire country, while many areas of the west including those bordering Afghanistan and India are no go zones for Aussies.

Just this year, the Institute for Economics and Peace found Pakistan was among five countries with the highest concentrated levels of terrorist activities.

Many cities and areas are also regarded as unsafe.

In 2013, an Australian-Pakistani family was killed in Islamabad.

Amir Ullah Khan, his wife Nadia, and three children — sons Adam and seven-year-old Haider, and daughter Roman — were killed in October with the family's nephew confessing to the crime, the ABC reported.

Turkey on the other hand, regarded as a right of passage for many Aussies, has had the biggest hit in declining traveller numbers.

The number of Australians visiting Turkey in the 12 months to October 2016, has halved (27,200) compared to 2015 (55,000). But there would have been an increase in visitors to Gallipoli in 2015 for the centenary of the Anzac landing.

With growing instability and terror attacks, DFAT advises Australians to reconsider their need to travel to the major Turkish cities of Istanbul and Ankara.

It warns the Syrian border is a "do not travel" zone.

While figures for smaller countries other do not travel countries including Sudan and CAR are not available, DFAT figures show Aussies visitors to sub-Saharan Africa increased from 155,100 in 2015 to 162,400 in 2016.

Paris remains popular but the number of Aussies visiting has declined in recent months.Source:Supplied

    EUROPE

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the numbers of Australians visiting France have decreased from 152,700 in 2015 to 136,200 in 2016, following terror attacks in Paris and Nice.

DFAT has urged travellers to exercise a high degree of caution when visiting the country due to the ongoing threat of terrorist attacks.

Visitor numbers for neighbour Germany, which doesn't have travel warnings, have remained relatively stable, with 107,700 visitors in 2016 compared to 105,700 travellers the year before.

These figures were compiled before recent terror attacks took place in Germany, including yesterday's tragedy at a Berlin Christmas market.

At least 12 were killed and up to 50 people were injured on Monday evening when a truck ploughed into festive shoppers.

Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack via its Aamaq Agency outlet while police have released the only suspect believed to be behind the attack.

    CLOSER TO HOME

Indonesia, and Bali, in particular, remains a popular destination for Aussies, despite DFAT warning travellers to exercise a high degree of caution there.

The country remains a deadly one for Australians with 93 deaths recorded in the year to June, the Courier-Mail reported.

Another 144 were injured during the same period.

Despite this, the number of Australians visiting Indonesia increased to 1,232,600 in the 12 months to October 2016, from 1,114,100 in 2015. The government recommends Australians exercise a high degree of caution in Indonesia, and to reconsider travel to certain regions.

Finder.com.au money expert Bessie Hassan said it was great Australians took out travel insurance, but warned people could easily get caught out by policy fine print.

"While you may be able to find a travel insurance policy to take with you when visiting a country with a travel warning, you're unlikely to be successful if you make a claim," Ms Hassan said.

"Most policies state that if the claim is directly or indirectly caused from travelling to these countries with a DFAT warning, then you won't be covered.

"The only situation in which you will be covered for countries with travel warnings is if the warning is issued after you have booked your trip and purchased travel insurance. In this case some insurers may cover you for any cancellations that occur as a result."

Up to 1516 died overseas in 2015-2016, 214 deadly accidents and 47 murders. The latest DFAT statistics.

Why Malaysians are staying home this holiday season

KUALA LUMPUR — The end of the year is usually holiday time for Malaysians, especially with the long school break.

Recent years have been different, however, as a combination of rising costs and a deteriorating ringgit have made holidays — particularly abroad — a greater luxury than they once were.

Nearly a dozen families polled by Malay Mail Online said they were cutting back, either by trying to select more affordable options or even foregoing vacations altogether.

One such family that has opted to give up holidays completely is that of Mr Jagjit Singh's.

"We just cannot afford holidays anymore. The cost of it is too expensive. We just end up taking them to malls or parks," he told Malay Mail Online, referring to his children.

The "trips" to the mall also do not mean they get to spend lavishly there, as the family mostly uses their time window-shopping or possibly watching a movie.

According to his wife, Ms Taranjit Kaur, a local holiday would cost them between RM1,000 (S$322) and RM2,000 per trip, which they can ill afford.

"In the current economic situation, my husband has to do Uber despite him having an office job. I also support our income by tutoring part time," Ms Taranjit, 31, said.

The ringgit this week fell to its lowest since the Asian Financial Crisis, spurred by an investor sell-down of emerging market assets as well as Bank Negara Malaysia's ongoing crackdown on currency speculators.

It traded at 4.48 to the US dollar on Monday (Dec 19) morning, a level that it has not reached since the 1998 crisis.

Nurse Amutha Rayaretinam, whose family visited Istanbul, Turkey last year, said they would be travelling to a local destination this year, possibly Port Dickson in Negri Sembilan or Langkawi island in Kedah.

"The currency is very bad… I used to go travelling once a year but this year I cut off because now our currency is very low.

"Now wherever we go our currency value very low, last year I still went," the 38-year-old mother of two told Malay Mail Online.

Those who still plan to holiday abroad are also cutting back, opting to visit a single country rather than going on the multiple-nation tours that they previously chose.

Mother of two school-going children, Ms Pei Gin, is among those considering this option to allow their families to still go for holidays outside the country.

"There is not much travelling for us now. We have lessened our spending, of course. We used to go for long overseas holidays, like two to three places. Now, we have to narrow it down to one, if we do go at all," the homemaker said.

According to travel consultant Annuar Rizwan, his profit is down by nearly half compared to last year due to Malaysians opting to remain in the country as well as from competition of the ever-growing number of "staycation" providers.

To cope, he said he either takes his family for domestic holidays or to theme parks such as Sunway Lagoon.

"Usually we just go window shopping at malls. We don't buy anything because we can't afford it. We just look and see," the father of two school-going daughters said.

Mr Annuar added that his family is prioritising education for his two girls, and needed to scale back any luxury spending.

They also try to save where they can, such as shopping for discounted school supplies or during sales.

"Education is one thing we don't think we can cut down or reduce on. We have cut down on their shopping allowance and have tried restricting them from spending unnecessarily."

But not everyone is complaining about foreign trips becoming more expensive

The Malaysian Inbound Tourism Association (Mita) told Malay Mail Online that business has been booming for its 1,500 members, although it did not provide statistics.

Mita president Uzaidi Udanis also said local holidays is still very affordable if consumers are shrewd at spotting deals, such as early booking discounts or choosing off-season stays.

"The local destinations are ever popular among Malaysians. There might be a drop from overseas travels but as far as local travels are concerned there is an increase. Fewer people are leaving the country," he said.

Even travel agents are opting to holiday locally. MALAY MAIL ONLINE

The Latest: 1st Aleppo evacuees in 2 days reported

BEIRUT — The latest on the conflict in Syria (all times local):

    1 a.m.

A Syrian war monitoring group says the first convoy to evacuate civilians and fighters from eastern Aleppo in over 48 hours has arrived safely to the Aleppo countryside.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said shortly before midnight Sunday that government forces allowed five buses to leave Aleppo. An attack on a separate convoy of buses earlier in the day had cast doubt on the fate of the evacuations.

Thousands of Syrians are in need of evacuation from the government's siege of the opposition's last foothold in Aleppo, once the country's commercial capital and its largest city. Rebels surrendered the enclave to the government in a deal brokered in Turkey last week that would evacuate fighters and civilians unwilling to return to living under government authority.

But the evacuations have moved along at a halting pace. Several thousand were able to leave the city at midweek but this was only a fraction of total in need. The government's side obstructed evacuations Friday to demand simultaneous evacuations of the sick and wounded from two nearby villages, Fouah and Kefarya, that are besieged by rebels.

    ___

    12:15 a.m.

The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations says a compromise Security Council resolution to be voted on Monday would quickly put over 100 U.N. personnel on the ground to monitor evacuations from Aleppo, the former rebel stronghold now under Syrian government control.

Ambassador Samantha Power told reporters that following the siege in eastern Aleppo there have been "many, many reports of people being pulled off buses and disappeared, whether into conscription or into torture chambers or killed outright."

She says the United Nations doesn't know the facts because it's not there, but if U.N. monitors are deployed it could deter "some of the worst excesses."

France and Russia announced agreement on a draft resolution after Security Council negotiations Sunday. A vote is scheduled for Monday morning.

Power says that "the text contains all the elements for safe, secure, dignified evacuation, for humanitarian access to those who choose to remain in eastern Aleppo" and for protecting civilians.

If the resolution is adopted and works, Power predicts a rapid exodus of people from eastern Aleppo on buses with monitors that pass through monitored checkpoints.

    ___

    11:30 p.m.

A senior Russian diplomat says the foreign ministers of Russia, Turkey and Iran will meet in Moscow to discuss Syria.

Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said Sunday in remarks carried by the Tass news agency that the meeting will take place Tuesday.

He said Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov discussed plans for the meeting in a phone call with his counterparts from Turkey and Iran and they welcomed the idea.

Earlier reports said the meeting would be held Dec. 27.

Russia and Iran have backed Syrian President Bashar Assad throughout the nearly six-year Syrian conflict, while Turkey has supported Assad's foes.

Russian and Turkey have recently narrowed their differences on Syria and co-sponsored an agreement for the withdrawal of rebels and civilians from Aleppo. Thousands left the rebel-controlled neighborhoods of Aleppo on Thursday, but many others are still trapped in eastern Aleppo.

A compromise U.N. resolution to be put to a vote calls for the United Nations and other institutions to monitor evacuations from eastern Aleppo and demands that the U.N. chief urgently consult Syria and other parties on arrangements for immediate deployment of the monitors.

The agreed text also demands that all parties allow unconditional and immediate access for the U.N. and its partners to deliver humanitarian aid and medical care "and respect and protect all civilians across Aleppo and throughout Syria."

France and Russia initially submitted rival draft resolutions, then announced agreement on a text after more than three hours of closed-door consultations by the U.N. Security Council on Sunday. The final draft is expected to be put to a vote at 9 a.m. EST Monday.

The text was obtained by The Associated Press. It expresses alarm at "the continued deterioration of the devastating humanitarian situation in Aleppo and by the fact that urgent humanitarian evacuations and assistance are now needed by a large number of Aleppo inhabitants."

Russia and France have announced agreement on a compromise U.N. resolution to deploy U.N. monitors to eastern Aleppo to ensure safe evacuations and immediate delivery of humanitarian aid.

France's U.N. ambassador Francois Delattre told reporters after more than three hours of closed consultations Sunday that the Security Council will vote on the compromise resolution at 9 a.m. EST on Monday.

He said some countries want to report to their capitals overnight and "hopefully we'll have a positive vote" but he said he was still "cautious at this stage."

Russia's U.N. ambassador Vitaly Churkin told reporters before consultations that Moscow could not accept the French draft resolution unless it was changed and he presented council members with a rival text.

As he left consultations Sunday afternoon, Churkin told reporters: "I think we put in some good hours of work and I think we have a good text, and we're going to vote tomorrow morning."

Delattre said approval of the resolution "would give us collectively the tools to avoid ... a situation in which after the end of major military operations, forces including militias, would commit mass atrocities."

He said it would also "give us some leverage to try to open the way to a broader cease-fire and toward political negotiations."

Activists say hundreds of Syrians anxiously awaiting evacuation from east Aleppo have been trapped for over eight hours in a no-man's-land between rebel and government control, without food or water.

East Aleppo resident Rami Zien, who says he is on one of the buses "stopped a no-man's land", told The Associated Press via messenger service that evacuees were stressed and frightened.

"Government forces are just ahead of me and if anything goes wrong I'll be the first to die," he wrote.

Zien said evacuees are crammed, 70 people to a bus, with many having no room to sit. He said the Red Crescent, which is facilitating the evacuation, has been unable to provide water. He said there are between 50-to-60 buses in the convoy.

Thousands of civilians and fighters are awaiting urgent evacuation from Syria's largest city after rebels surrendered their last foothold in city to government control in a deal brokered in Ankara last week.

    8:15 p.m.

Russia has proposed a rival U.N. resolution that would require Syrian government approval before the United Nations could deploy any monitors to eastern Aleppo to check on civilians.

Russia's U.N. Ambassador Vitaly Churkin told reporters as he headed into closed Security Council consultations earlier Sunday that he would veto a French-drafted resolution unless it was changed.

The French draft calls on Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to immediately redeploy U.N. humanitarian staff to carry out "neutral monitoring" on evacuations from besieged parts of Aleppo. It also calls on Ban to take urgent steps to enable the U.N. and its partners to observe "the well-being of civilians," and whether international law is being respected.

The Russian draft eliminates any U.N. monitoring of the evacuation of civilians from Aleppo.

It only asks the secretary-general to provide security and other arrangements "in coordination with the interested parties" — which include the Syrian government now in control of eastern Aleppo — to allow U.N. personnel "to monitor the condition of civilians remaining in Aleppo in light of international humanitarian law."

Diplomats, speaking on condition of anonymity because consultations are closed, said Security Council members were discussing whether it is possible to merge the two texts.

    7:30 p.m.

France's U.N. ambassador says the goal of its U.N. resolution is to avoid "mass atrocities" by Syrian forces, and especially militias, in eastern Aleppo which is now defenseless following the defeat of rebel forces.

He told reporters before heading into closed Security Council consultations on the French-drafted resolution Sunday that its demands — safe evacuations, immediate and unconditional U.N. access to deliver humanitarian aid, and protection of medical facilities and personnel — "are very difficult to compromise."

Delattre stressed that "it's a humanitarian resolution to save lives."

Russia's U.N. ambassador Vitaly Churkin said he will veto the resolution unless it is changed, arguing that allowing monitors to wander in the ruins of eastern Aleppo without proper preparation "has disaster written all over it."

Delattre said "our goal is to avoid another or a new Srebrenica," a reference to the massacre of nearly 8,000 Bosnian Muslims who sought protection in the U.N. safe haven of Srebrenica in 1995 during the Bosnian war.

If Russia vetoes the resolution, he said France will seek an emergency special session of the U.N. General Assembly.

    6:40 p.m.

Russia says it will veto a French-drafted U.N. resolution demanding immediate access to besieged areas of Aleppo and "neutral monitoring" of the evacuation of civilians.

Russia's U.N. Ambassador Vitaly Churkin told reporters before Security Council consultations on the draft resolution Sunday that Moscow has no problem with any kind of monitoring.

But he said the idea that monitors "should be told to go to wander around the ruins of eastern Aleppo without proper preparation and without informing everybody about what is going to happen — it has disaster written all over it."

He says Russia has "some very simple ideas" — which he refused to disclose — to put to council members, and that if they agree a resolution could be adopted Sunday.

But France's U.N. Ambassador Francois Delattre said he intends to put the draft to a vote immediately after consultations and indicated he wouldn't accept any changes.

Activists say militants have burned at least five buses assigned to evacuate wounded and sick people from two villages in northern Syria. The incident could scuttle a wider deal that encompasses the evacuation of thousands of trapped rebel fighters and civilians from the last opposition foothold in east Aleppo.

The opposition's Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Sunday that the al-Qaida affiliated Fatah al-Sham Front burned buses assigned to evacuate people from the rebel-besieged villages of Foua and Kfarya.

Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant group fighting alongside Syria's government, says the buses were burned during fighting between the al-Qaida-affiliated Fatah al-Sham Front and a rebel group that supported the evacuations.

The Observatory says six buses were burned while Hezbollah's media outlet put the number at five.

The head of Israel's official Holocaust memorial says the world must put an end to the killing in Syria.

Yad Vashem Chairman Avner Shalev's comments Sunday marked a rare venture into contemporary affairs for a body devoted to commemorating the World War II genocide of 6 million Jews. Speaking at an academic conference devoted to the plight of Jewish refugees in the Holocaust, Shalev expressed "deep concern over the appalling images of massacres of human beings" in Syria.

He noted how after World War II world leaders enacted universal principles and instituted organizations aimed at preventing future crimes against humanity. Shalev says "the global community must put a stop to these atrocities and avert further suffering as well as provide humanitarian assistance to the victims seeking safe haven."

    2 p.m.

Syrian media says buses and ambulances are preparing to enter east Aleppo to resume evacuating rebels and civilians from the opposition's remaining districts in the city.

Pro-government Al-Ikhbariya TV says Sunday that convoys are also preparing to evacuate over 2,000 wounded and sick residents from the northern Syrian villages of Foua and Kfarya , which are besieged by rebels.

In Aleppo, English teacher Wissam Zarqa says families have been assigned bus numbers and are preparing to evacuate after pro-government forces halted operations on Friday.

The government's side said it wanted simultaneous evacuations from Foua and Kfarya. Several thousand civilians evacuated Aleppo Thursday before the process was halted.

    10 a.m.

The U.N. Security Council is expected to vote on a resolution demanding immediate and unconditional access for the United Nations and its partners to besieged parts of Aleppo and throughout Syria to ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid.

The council scheduled consultations Sunday morning on the French-drafted resolution followed by an open meeting where members are expected to vote.

The draft resolution, obtained by The Associated Press, calls on Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to immediately redeploy U.N. staff already on the ground to carry out "neutral monitoring" and "direct observation and to report on evacuations."

It stresses that evacuations of civilians "must be voluntary and to destinations of their choice"

Russia's U.N. Ambassador Vitaly Churkin said Friday he would examine the draft but was skeptical that monitors could be deployed quickly.
