Turkey, Greece determined to solve refugee problem together

Effectively, the scale of Europe's Syrian refugee resettlement program would be determined by the scale of people trafficked on its southern border.

The plans have been praised by German Chancellor Angela Merkel as having the potential to hurting smugglers, a major cause of refugee deaths at sea.

"Thousands of people are stuck here", Ai said. "That's why we took the boat and came here". Those who attempted the sea route illegally would be returned and go to the back of the queue.

He also asked to bring forward European Union visa liberalization for Turks to June from end-2016 and to open five more negotiating chapters in Turkey's long-stalled European Union accession process.

As Greece had decided Turkey was "a safe country" , he said, the returns policy was legal.

However, UNHCR refugee coordinator for Europe Vincent Cochetel, who said he is did not know the details of the proposed deal, told VOA he worries it may lack safeguards to protect asylum-seekers. He did not specify the required documents. The announcement came at the end of a long day of meetings in Brussels.

"But last month, Austria put new restrictions on who could enter, prompting border closures throughout the so-called Balkan route". Pressure would ease on Greece, where tens of thousands are now stranded and thousands more arrive every day hoping to move north to preferred destinations in Germany or Scandinavia.

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras flew directly to the Turkish city from Brussels to attend the talks.

Amnesty International said the plan was "wrought with moral and legal flaws" .

The United Nations refugee agency has said it is concerned with some aspects of the EU-Turkey plan for resolving the migrant crisis.

The UN's refugee agency said any collective expulsion of foreigners was "not consistent with European law" .

"The aim is to stop irregular migration and to ensure a regular migration", Cavusoglu said. This group includes people fleeing war-torn countries such as Syria, who are likely to be granted refugee status, as well as people who are seeking jobs and better lives, who governments are likely to rule are economic migrants.

In exchange for taking back migrants, Turkey - already hosting some 2.7 million Syrian refugees on its soil - is driving a hard bargain.

European Union leaders said early Tuesday they reached the outlines for a possible deal with Ankara to return thousands of migrants to Turkey and said they were confident a full agreement could be reached at a summit next week.

Idomeni continued to see arrivals on Tuesday morning, albeit at a slower pace, witnesses said. In this case, we may fix spelling and punctuation.

If Turkey were really serious about forging a closer relationship with Europe, then it would be more proactive in monitoring those from Isil and other Islamist-inspired terror groups that seek to do us harm. "But there is no reason to panic". The Czech Republic has not been on the route the refugees are using on their way to rich western countries. The police? The military?

For others, the conditions were just too much to bear, and about 200 people boarded buses bound south for refugee camps in and around Athens or other parts of Greece. It could be finalized at a summit on March 17.

Men sit on the ground during a protest to call for the opening of the borders near the village of Idomeni.

Last year, the European Union agreed to resettle 160,000 refugees, but less than 1,000 have been processed so far.

The Interior Ministry said that the number of people arriving in Germany dropped to 61,428 in February from 91,671 in January. The corridor from Syria is often used by migrants from other countries, who are not victims of war.

Macedonia had previously let a trickle of people across the border but on Monday even that number was barred from passing as heavy rain added to the misery of those waiting at makeshift camps with limited supplies.
