More Bahrainis choosing Turkey as tourist destination

After Arab channels started showing Arabic-dubbed Turkish dramas, Turkey has seen a significant boost in Arab tourists

Manama: There has been a significant increase in the number of Bahrainis visiting Turkey, according to the Turkish ambassador.

More than 41,500 Bahrainis visited Turkey in 2016 up from 32,476 the previous year.

Conversely, 34,292 Turks visited Bahrain in 2016, up from 27,137 the year before.

"This is another indication that relations between our two countries have been steadily developing and gaining further strength. Tourism is a major dynamic component in their progress, and we at the embassy in Manama are delighted to observe that Turkey is a favourite travel destination and a holiday preference for Bahrainis," Hatun Demirer said.

In 2000, only 491 Bahrainis visited Turkey.

After pan-Arab channels started broadcasting Arabic-dubbed Turkish dramas in the late 2000s, Turkey has seen a significant boost in Ar ab tourists.

Arabs, particularly women, were fascinated how the operas conveyed Turkish Muslim women living modern lifestyles.

Demirer is the second woman ambassador from Turkey appointed to Bahrain.

Hilal Başkal made history twice in June 2001 by becoming the first woman ambassador in Bahrain and the first Turkish woman appointed as a diplomatic representative to an Arab country.

She left Bahrain in December 2005.
