Reykjavik is the holiday destination that has seen the biggest leap in popularity over the past two years, according to hotel comparison site Trivago.

Analysing data from users worldwide, it found that Cuba's largest beach resort, Varadero, was the second most popular destination.

In its Global Summer Trends report, Trivago said only Spain featured twice in the top 10 trending destinations, with Alicante in fourth place and Torrevieja in tenth.

Fethiye in Turkey, which has seen many UK operators reduce or cancel their programmes this year due to a spate of terror attacks, was the third most popular.

Malacca in Malaysia, Cartagena in Colombia, Cancun, Cape Town and the Croatian resort of Crikvenica complete the top 10.
