Rescued Goldens coming to Jax from Turkey

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Eighteen golden retrievers in the country of Turkey are preparing to make a trans-continental trip. Their destination is Florida and three of those goldens will be coming to Jacksonville.

Reed and Judi Brown with G.R.E.A.T. Rescue of Northeast Florida are eager for the dogs to arrive.

"So we read about it and we said, 'Why not?'" Reed said.

The effort began with a golden retriever rescue group out of Atlanta that wanted to save the multitude of goldens that have been abandoned by families in Turkey.

"People in Turkey adopted them and they became these 60 to 70 pound dogs and were no longer a status symbol and the people turned them out into the forest and areas of Turkey and they have had to make it on their own," Reed said.

The breed is known for its gentle nature – and the dogs don't fare well against the elements and other wild animals. Judi says their golden rescue, along with others in Florida, have wait list after wait list of families that want a golden retriever, so why not take the unwanted goldens in Turkey and bring them to loving families in the United States?

"We are trying to make a difference for all the dogs," she said.

The dogs will arrive in Miami in early January, then various rescue groups in Florida will pick up the dogs.

"They all have to come with health certificates and be spayed and neutered and have some preliminary veterinary care," explains Judi.

The Browns are looking for foster families for the three dogs once they arrive in Jacksonville and donations to help rescue more dogs Turkey.

"The people that adopt them, when they get asked where did you get your dog from? From Turkey!" Reed said.

The families that foster the goldens will have the first choice on whether they want to adopt the dogs permanently. For information on becoming a foster or donating to help the rescue group visit www.greatrescue.org.
